39 Songs | Birthday Playlist

I'm turning 39 today, which is just wild. Every year that I get older, my birthday honestly feels a little bit stranger. I just can't seem to reconcile that number (which is just a year shy of 40!) with.. well, me. I remember when I turned 29, all I could think about was turning 30 the following year and how it lit this fire in me to quit my job, switch careers to be a full-time UX designer, and finally move out into an apartment on my own. I'm getting that same feeling again now. Except, I'm mostly thinking about buying a townhouse/condo, meeting someone, and hoping that a trip to Europe or overseas will be in the cards for me next year. (Any good vibes and support you'd like to send my way would be much appreciated ☺)

In honor of my birthday, I came up with this great (read: great but way harder than I thought it was going to be) idea for today's post. I created a playlist of 39 songs, one for each year (and it had to be released in that year too) starting with 1983, the year I was born, to 2021 (it took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out why I had 40 songs when I included 2022). But the music that ultimately made it onto this playlist meant something to me at that period in my life or was my most played song that year (thank goodness for last.fm!).

The songs from 1983-1986 I obviously fell in love with later on, either as a middle schooler or even adult, but the first song I ever remember loving was "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tiffany and I was 4 years old at the time. As the playlist goes on, it shows how my taste in music has always been eclectic and as hard as this was to put together, it was super fun and nostalgic (the 90s and early 00s music particularly holds a special place in my heart) to look back on the songs that made an impact on me because music has always been an important part of who I am.

So have a listen and I hope you enjoy!
