A Truthwitch Affair | Threadsisters to the End (+ Giveaway!)

Welcome to A Truthwitch Affair! All week long, Alexa of Alexa Loves Books and I will be showing our love and enthusiasm for Susan Dennard's new fantasy series Truthwitch. We are both huge fans of Susan's and first fell in love with her writing when we read her debut series, Something Strange and Deadly (see here and here). And while we'll always have a soft spot for the books that introduced us to her, we are head-over-heels for Truthwitch!

Aside from the obvious awesomeness like the amazing world building and storytelling -- at the heart of the book are two best friends, aka threadsisters, Safi and Iseult. And it's the devotion and friendship between these two fierce, flawed women that struck a chord with us. So it felt right to get things started by talking about them, our own friendship and one of our personal favorite fictional BFFs.

Can I just start out by saying I love these two? Safi and Iseult are opposites in every way. One impulsive and rash, the other more strategic and stoic. One light, one dark. The ying to the other's yang. I have a soft spot for friendships like this (probably because I have a BFF who I'm very different from too). But those differences don't matter. What does matter is that they get each other. They have each other's backs. They stand by the other through all the times. That, more than anything, resonated strongly with me throughout the entire book. It's not often you read a fantasy series (or let's face it, many YA books in general), where the friendship between two women are at the story. So whether they're fighting side by side, apart trying to find their way to the other or having a rare moment of goofing off, I looked forward to all their moments. (And can't wait for more!)

We've talked about our friendship before and how we met so I'll keep this short and sweet! It's hard to believe we became friends only three years ago because it feels like we've known each other for much longer. Even though it was our mutual love of books that brought us together, it's not what made us as close as we are. It's that we talk almost every day. That I can ask her on an impromptu hangout and I know she'll always make time for me. And that she's my partner-in-crime on the blog (if you only knew how many times we've said to each other, "so I have this idea..."). But off the blog as well (outings in NYC, road trips, concerts, you name it!). Most importantly though, like Safi and Iseult, we're there for one another and I am so thankful for that.

One of my favorite fictional BFFs ever are Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang from Grey's Anatomy. When I hear/see #friendshipgoals, I think of them. I love that they're each other's person. That they can kick significant others out of bed in order to talk. That they dance it out. That they're honest even when it hurts. I think they were always the heart of the show and even with Cristina gone, no one person or relationship can take the place of what their dynamic brought on screen. They've made me laugh and cry (and feel a wee bit envious!) so I had to mention them as my favorite BFFs.

  3. Might be a little unconventional, but I really enjoy the friendship between Lorelai and Rory on Gilmore Girls. I especially love that as the seasons went on and Rory became more independent their relationship wasn't perfect (it seemed so much more real this way). They will always be my favorite mother daughter duo and that they were friends as well as mom/kid made it so much better!

My favorite book friendship is Rudy and Liesel in The Book Thief. On TV I'd probably have to go with Pam and Jim on The Office :)

  9. I really enjoyed the friendships in The Lunar Chronicles, even in each of the romances there was that feeling like there was more than attraction, all the couples had bonded on a friendship level as well.
