Return to Green Gables: Fiction Recommendations

There's no series quite like Anne of Green Gables but we do have some recommendations for you! Hannah will cover more Lucy Maud Montgomery reads, Alexa has non-fiction and I have fiction. Each of the books below remind me of Anne in some way or another and hopefully you find something here to read!

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm by Kate Douglas | This book is actually Anne's American contemporary. They were released around the same time and both are about a young girl sent away to live on a farm, who has an active imagination and enjoys writing. I read this in high school and enjoyed it a lot!

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares | One of my favorite things about Anne is her propensity towards positive female friendships. She's genuinely kind and enjoys finding kindred spirits. Likewise, I love the friendship between Carmen, Tibby, Lena and Bridget.

Ana of California by Andi Teran | This book is heavily inspired by Anne but the author gives it her own unique twist.

Matilda by Roald Dahl |  Both Anne and Matilda share a spunky personality with a love of books. Even though the stories are different, I can't help seeing a similarity between these two awesome young heroines.

Love and Other Foreign Words by Erin McCahan | Both girls speak the truth in a way that seems to shock or exasperate the people in their lives and they both have trouble seeing what’s right in front of them (romantically).

Open Road Summer by Emery Lord | Two lifelong best friends and a romance that starts off antagonistically from the girl's perspective? That sounds familiar!

  1. I approve 100% of these fictional recommendations, and not just because I've read all of them save one ;) But seriously, you've captured the elements of Anne's story and her character's spirit with your choices and I love that!
