I went to my first Zumba class with Loren and Carina this weekend and a few things have become really obvious.
I'm out of shape.
All the dance skills I had from years of ballet and jazz - totally nonexistent now.
I was way more comfortable with my body as teenager.
Funny how that happens, right? I always hear women talking about feeling more comfortable in their own skin as they get older. Not me though. I was most comfortable in my late teens. I remember just being able to dance without a bit of self-consciousness (I also remember my younger self's fast metabolism - wouldn't mind getting that back too!).
I think that's what struck me the most about watching the instructor. She was completely into the choreography. High energy, no inhibitions. I can see why her class is so popular. But as I watched her dance, I kept thinking - I used to be able to move like that! Okay, maybe not exactly like that but close enough. Carina and I were saying that we needed to get our groove back. Which sounds silly but that's exactly what it felt like after the class. I'm not sure if I love Zumba yet (because I still feel awkward) but it's definitely something I can see myself really enjoying as time goes on.
I'll let you know how class #2 goes (whenever that may be!).

I felt exactly the same way when I took my first class a few years back. All my jazz lessons seemed to have vanished and I felt a bit like a rookie! :)
ReplyDeleteYes! I totally felt like a rookie but i'm hoping that feeling will go away eventually haha. Do you still take zumba classes now?
DeleteYou should come back with me!!!! You've seen my "dance" moves, or lack thereof. I totally look like a sweaty spazz in class, but it's fun!
ReplyDeleteI actually do want to go back again! It was fun, I just need to get used to it. And next time, I might warm up beforehand.. my calves ached the next day!
DeleteI've been wondering about Zumba for a long time now. keep me posted! I wanna know how Rachel got her groove back haha
ReplyDeleteHahah I'll let you know how it goes. It's definitely worth a try though if you're thinking about taking a class.
