My thoughts ...
Short summary: The Republic, which was once the western United States, is constantly at war with its neighbors and filled with elite rich districts. One such district is home to fifteen-year-old June, a prodigy being groomed for the Republic's military. But there are also poor slums in the Republic and that it where Day, the country's most wanted criminal, comes from. June and Day have no reason to cross paths until one day June's brother is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Then their lives become intertwined and certain unexpected truths come to light.
The good: I had expected the book to be solely from June's point-of-view so I was pleasantly surprised to see that the chapters alternated between the two protagonists. It allowed the reader to get inside both their heads which I enjoyed because the characters are so interesting. First of all - both characters are pretty badass. June is intelligent, strong and observant to the point where I wondered if she had a little OCD. Day is the same way, minus the OCD tendencies, and a lot more street smart. Both are motivated by love for their families, take pride in being defiant and fight for what they believe in. All great things in protagonists! The background to their story and this new dystopian society was also really interesting (I swear, the way governments are portrayed in these books gets more evil with each new one I read!).
The bad: I have no complaints about the characters (aside from them being fifteen; in my head they were at least seventeen). But I do wish there had been more details about how the Republic came to be. There's a flashback in Day's memory that hints at a twist that may come later in the trilogy but I found myself wanting to know more now.
Do I recommend?: YES. Fans of dystopian fiction and strong female protagonists, like myself, will enjoy this book a lot!
Happy reading!
